Thunkable AI Builder: What it Actually Does

Thunkable AI launched in March 2026. It builds on more than a decade of no-code mobile development and more than 12 million apps created on the platform. You start by describing the app you want, and the AI Builder generates a real project with screens, layout, and logic that you can fully inspect and edit. From there, you keep building in Discuss Mode, an ongoing conversation where you ask for changes and see the results in real time. Fast Edits handles quick tweaks, and Version History lets you roll back when something doesn't work out. You can also drop into the block or code editor whenever you want more control. If something breaks, the AI Debugger explains the issue and suggests a fix. Thunkable Live lets you test on a real iOS or Android device as you build. When you're ready, Thunkable guides you through publishing to both app stores. Unlike many AI builders that produce web-based prototypes, Thunkable generates fully native apps, all within one platform.

Thunkable launched Thunkable AI in March 2026, bringing generative AI into a platform that already had more than a decade of no-code mobile development behind it and more than 12 million apps built on its original product. The way we’ve designed it is to be as intuitive as possible: Describe the app you want in plain language, and Thunkable’s AI Builder generates a real, native mobile app, publishable to Apple App Store and Google Play.

Where the AI Builder fits with Thunkable’s no-code foundation

Thunkable AI grew directly out of the platform’s existing no-code foundation rather than launching as a separate product. It builds on more than a decade of experience helping people turn ideas into real, working mobile apps. That same track record now powers a faster, prompt-based way of building.

‍

A prompt in Thunkable AI produces the same kind of project a creator building by hand would produce: Real screens, blocks, and logic you can poke around in and inspect. The project AI generates is still fully editable. You can change the screens and design, adjust how different parts of the app behave, and continue building from what AI created.

How Thunkable AI actually works

Thunkable’s AI Builder supports three main stages of the app-building process: generating, refining, and publishing.

‍

  1. Project generation - You start by describing the app you want to build in your own natural language. “I want to make a fitness app with a talking ostrich in an 80s tracksuit as a mascot.” Thunkable’s AI will translate that description into a functional starting project: screens, layout, and initial logic generated in response to what you typed.

‍

  1. Building it out - From there, you refine and expand the app using Thunkable’s full toolset, covering both how it looks and how it works. Visual editing and image tools handle the design side. Logic and code editing handle the functional side. You can also change how the app behaves, like what happens when someone taps a button, submits information, or moves between screens. Discuss Mode, an integrated AI helper built into this stage, lets you talk through what you want to change while you test and iterate in real time, rather than starting a new prompt from scratch every time you want an adjustment.

‍

  1. Publishing - Thunkable simplifies submission and later updates to both the Apple App Store and Google Play. The two paths differ in practice: Apple submissions go straight to TestFlight through Thunkable’s publishing wizard, while Android submissions arrive as a downloadable app file that you upload to the Google Play Store yourself.

What the Thunkable AI toolset enables

Once your initial app is generated, Thunkable gives you different ways to keep building: customize what AI created, troubleshoot problems, and test the app before you publish.

Building and customizing. Most day-to-day building happens through Discuss Mode, an ongoing conversation with the tool that built your app. Instead of a single one-shot prompt, you describe a change, view the result, and ask for adjustments, all in the same thread. When you want more precise control over a specific piece of logic, the code editor lets you drop directly into the underlying logic, something Thunkable's AI Builder never requires but always keeps available. Small changes don't need a full rebuild either: Fast Edits handles quick adjustments on their own, built-in customizable images let you adjust visuals directly, and Version History lets you review or restore an earlier state of a project if a change doesn't work out.

Troubleshooting. When something isn't working the way you expect, two tools help you figure out why. The AI Debugger identifies and explains issues within your app's blocks, offering feedback and suggested fixes instead of leaving you to trace an error manually. The AI Chatbot, powered by ChatGPT, answers questions about how Thunkable works, the blocks Thunkable uses to build projects, and other general platform usage queries, without needing to leave the builder to look something up.

Testing before you publish. Live testing lets you run your app on a real iOS or Android device while you build, through the Thunkable Live mobile app, so you can catch problems immediately instead of waiting for a full export cycle to find out something's wrong.

How AI features are metered

Thunkable’s AI-powered features, including project generation, the AI Chatbot, and the AI Debugger, run on a token system. The number of tokens available to you depends on your Thunkable plan, and each AI action draws down from that allotment. This matters for how you use the tool in practice: Broad, well-thought-out prompts that describe exactly what you want tend to make better use of a token budget than a string of small, vague requests that each need a follow-up correction.

‍

It also means the code editor and block editor stay useful even for AI-first builders, since manual edits inside those tools run outside the token system entirely.

What “native” means here specifically

The detail that separates Thunkable’s AI Builder from a large share of the AI app builder category is what it actually produces. Many AI tools generate simple prototypes or web-based experiences labeled as mobile apps. Thunkable’s AI Builder generates fully native iOS and Android apps, and the platform manages the complete path from that generated app through App Store publishing. With Thunkable, the path from generating the app to testing, refining, and publishing it all happens within the same platform.

Who Thunkable AI Builder is for

Thunkable’s AI Builder is made for creators without a coding background and pro coders alike: Describe your idea, and Thunkable AI handles the design and technical implementation. The code editor, AI Debugger, and the ability to move between simple language prompting and direct logic editing mean a coding pro can go deeper and customize their apps while streamlining other aspects of app development. This all makes the AI Builder useful for anyone, no matter their team size or specialty, when it comes to having an app idea and wanting to build it exactly the way you want to, from the most granular details to the finishing touches.
