How to Build a No-Code MVP Without a Technical Co-Founder

You can build a native mobile app, ready for the App Store and Google Play, without writing code or hiring a developer. On Thunkable, you describe your app in plain language and the AI generates the screens, layout and logic. A good way to start is with a no-code MVP. An MVP, short for minimum viable product, is the simplest working version of your idea, good enough to put in front of people and see if they want it.
How to build a no-code MVP in five steps
- Choose the one question your MVP needs to answer, such as whether people will use it every day or pay for it.
- Describe your app to Thunkable's AI, which generates the screens, layout and logic.
- Add what your app needs: sign-in, a cloud database and, if you plan to charge, in-app purchases or subscriptions.
- Publish to the App Store and Google Play on a Builder or Advanced plan.
- Put it in front of people outside your circle of friends and family, then decide what to change, keep or cut.
Why the MVP step still matters
The point of an MVP is to answer one question before you invest much time or money: do people want this? Putting a working version in front of users for even a week usually teaches you more than months of planning on your own.
The technical co-founder problem
If you're starting a company around an app idea, you'll probably hear one piece of advice early on: find a technical co-founder, meaning someone with the coding skills to help build the product alongside you. It's good advice and famously hard to follow. Technical co-founders are in high demand, and they usually join for equity rather than a salary, so they're understandably cautious about giving months of their time to an idea that hasn't been tested yet.
The alternative, hiring developers or an agency, is often a founder's biggest early expense, and it means paying before you know whether anyone wants the app. A no-code MVP lets you test the idea before you take on either one, though a growing product still benefits from dedicated engineering once people are using it.
What building a no-code MVP involves
No-code means you build with plain-language instructions and a visual editor instead of programming code. Start by describing your app: who it's for, what it does and the first thing a user should be able to do. On Thunkable, the AI generates the screens, layout and logic from that description. You keep building by chatting with the AI in Discuss Mode, and you can take direct control whenever you need it: change screens in the visual editor, adjust logic in the Code Editor or use Version History to return to an earlier version of your project. If the AI gets stuck on something, you can step in and fix it yourself.
Founders often worry that an AI-built app will stall on accounts, data and payments. Your app can include all three: user sign-in with email, Google or Apple; a cloud database through a free Supabase account you connect to Thunkable; and in-app purchases and subscriptions.
Thunkable builds native apps, meaning apps built to run directly on a phone rather than through a browser, so your MVP is a version you can publish and keep building on. Publishing to the App Store and Google Play is available on the Builder and Advanced plans, and Apple and Google each require their own developer account.
What to test with your MVP
The faster you can build, the more of these tests you can run. Pick the questions before you build, then check each one with the people who try the app.
Will people use it every day? Ask test users whether they would open the app again tomorrow, then see whether they do. A yes looks like people returning on their own during the first week, without a reminder from you.
Will they pay for it? Ask what they would pay and when. A yes looks like someone joining a paid trial, pre-ordering or naming a price they would accept, rather than saying it sounds great.
Does the core feature solve the problem? Ask a new user to finish the app's main task without your help. A yes looks like finishing it unaided and being able to say what it saved them.
Mistakes that undercut a no-code MVP
Building too much before testing anything
An MVP loses its value once it stops being minimal. Every extra feature added before users see the app is a guess about what they will want, and polishing the design before you have confirmed demand is the most common version of that guess.
Testing only with friends and family
People close to you tend to be encouraging, which makes it hard to tell whether the app solves a problem or whether they are being supportive. Put it in front of people who match your target user and don't know you, so their reaction tells you whether the idea works.
Ignoring feedback you did not want to hear
A no-code MVP makes it cheap to be wrong early, but only if you use that to find out what's true rather than to confirm a decision you've already made. When several users stumble at the same point, change that part of the app.
What happens after your MVP works
Once your MVP shows that people want the app, the work shifts from proving the idea to improving it. You add the features users ask for most, fix the places where they get stuck and publish updates to the App Store and Google Play. Version History lets you review and restore earlier versions of your project as it changes, and Discuss Mode and the Code Editor stay available for each new feature. The project that proved the idea is the one you grow.
The advantage of a no-code MVP
More attempts matter more than raw speed on its own. A no-code MVP lets a solo founder test, learn and adjust several times in the time it would take to build one hand-coded version, which is a meaningful edge for someone starting from zero.
Start building free on Thunkable, then publish to the App Store and Google Play when your MVP is ready. Publishing to the stores requires a Builder or Advanced plan.
